7 Middlesex Blue Flannels
All-wool flannel, woven in 3-shaft twill of American wool and dyed fast indigo blue. Much in vogue 1860 to 1880 in the United States and was made at the Middlesex Mills, Howell, Mass., in weights from 9-oz. to 141/2-oz. per yard. Plain weave cloths, bleached or dyed blue. Blue bafts is the West African term for this style, and are plain cloths dyed blue. Usually low reed and pick and coarse yarns, such as 52 X 52, 20's / 18's. -

The name means " 120 threads " in the vernacular and in the trade the cloth is denominated as 10, 12, etc., up to 40 punjam, according to the number of times the warp contains 120 threads. These are coloured cotton cloths for native wear in East and South Africa, South America, and some parts of India. The warp is usually yarn dyed blue, and fancy coloured wefts form cross stripes. There is a bar of blue weft then a bar of other colours. Made about 56 ends and 44 picks per inch, 30's warp, 16's weft. -

18 Grass Cloth (Canton Linen)
A plain weave fabric made in China from ramie yarns. It is woven on hand looms in coarse reeds and with few picks. The natural lustre of the yams is not interfered with, as the fabric is used in the loom state. A small quantity is dyed blue, or bleached and used for dresses, but the bulk of the cloth is used for table covers in the loom state. Widths are 15-in. or 16-in. and lengths 30 yards, made on native looms. 19 Kashan Rugs
Persian rugs of very fine grain and closeness of texture and a notably short and velvety pile. The patterns are flowers in rows or on graceful curling stems with foliage. Usually there is a diamond-shaped medallion centrepiece. The borders are elaborate and frequently have as many as seven stripes. Cotton warp and dyed blue weft. There are two picks between each row of the wool tufts which are tied in " Senna knots." The colouring is dark and sombre, but rich. -
